Compulsory CPD – what does it all mean?
Accountants have always been required to continually maintain their knowledge and skills. However there have been considerable changes to the continuing professional development (CPD) guidelines. From 1 January 2006 CIMA, ICAEW, CIPFA, ACCA, ICAS and AAT were required to introduce CPD for all professionals. This is monitored on an annual basis with records having to be retained and also available for inspection.
All professional institutes broadly follow one of two different approaches, either completing a set number of hours each year or planning the development they need, how they are going to achieve it and the proposed benefit that they will receive. In order to get the most from your CPD training, consider what your job currently involves and what areas of knowledge will be needed in the future. Professional development includes not only technical knowledge, but also IT, personal and management skills.
