Courses selected
Objectives
“We are a small firm with a low turnover of staff. As a result of this our managers tend to work their way through the ranks, so we want to give them all the help we can to become effective managers. We recognise the need to develop our team members’ management and personal skills alongside their technical skills if they are to become the ‘rounded’ business professionals of the future – the kind of team members we need to help the firm achieve its objectives of delivering exceptional client service.”
Reasons for choosing Mercia
“We already use Mercia for our technical training so we knew we could rely on them to deliver what we wanted. Also, their programmes address the key management competencies accountants need to succeed in today’s competitive, changing business environment. Finally, the open programme provides a cost effective route to quality management training for a firm of our size for which in-house training was not an option.”
Training process
“A number of our staff have attended a selection of courses from the Mercia Management and Business Development Open Programme.
Before each course, participants are requested to complete individual training needs analyses which they return to Mercia in advance of the course to allow the content to be adapted to their needs as appropriate. Participants are also sent preparation work which ensures that they arrive at the course focused for the day’s training ahead.”
Results
“The training has provided our staff with the ability to deal with situations which arise in the workplace involving both staff and partners. There is an increased confidence, capability and commitment from those who have attended the training and they display a willingness to learn from each other and share best practices.
On-course action planning and post-course feedback reports help to ensure benefits are transferred back into the workplace and line managers/partners are encouraged to follow up on the action plans with participants after the course as part of the firm’s appraisal processes.”
Conclusions
“Mercia’s professionalism and their knowledge of the independent accountancy sector, combined with a personal and pragmatic approach, makes them unique in the marketplace for this sort of training.”
