Richard studied for an Economics degree at the University of Sheffield. He then worked for Barber Harrison & Platt, Sheffield, primarily in audit and became ACA qualified in 2001. From 2003 he worked for FTC Kaplan, Nottingham, as a lecturer specialising in Financial Reporting but dipped into audit and tax as well. He was also responsible for the office accounts before they were centralised.

He is keen on most sports despite being a Northampton Town FC fan. He plays hockey for West Bridgford Hockey Club in Nottingham (they have a real ale bar in the clubhouse which may or may not have had an influence on his decision to join them). He shares a flat in West Bridgford with his girlfriend Helen although they may move to a bigger house to accommodate kittens! They enjoy eating out, drinking wine and going to concerts (but not necessarily all at the same time).
