John Sharkey

BA (Econ) ACA

John is the director of Mercia’s Management Training Division. Over his eighteen years of working for Mercia, he has built the Management Training Division into one of the leading providers of management and personal skills training to the independent accountancy sector. His goal is to pass on his accumulated knowledge and years of experience, as well as challenging participants to achieve their potential.

Sally Hutchings

BSc ACA

Sally is a senior training consultant within Mercia’s Management Training Division. Sally joined the team twenty four years ago and she specialises in helping others develop their communication and influencing skills. She is renowned for her ability to develop a strong rapport with her audience, helping them understand more effectively.

Michael Siviter

CIMA AAT

Michael is a senior training consultant within Mercia’s Management Training Division. He joined the Mercia lecturing team five years ago, previously lecturing with Kaplan Financial for four years as well as qualifying as an accountant with Rolls Royce. Michael brings a lot of energy into his courses, engaging his audiences and maximising their understanding and development. He is also a certified NLP practitioner and coach.

3 Day Programme

From £6,500 plus VAT and travel expenses

This programme is designed to help you recruit and retain the best possible staff to help in your internal succession challenges. This programme creates an understanding and awareness of the key skills required at each level and helps identify further development needs.

Day 1: Introduction to Management Workshop

A one day module designed to bring together the core management skills needed when taking the first steps into managing teams and client relationships.

Day 2: Management Development Workshop

A one day module that furthers your knowledge from Module 1. It helps participants to develop their ability at managing different types of people, their client portfolios and furthering the knowledge on how to build the firm’s client base.

Day 3: Leadership Development Workshop

A one day module which builds on from Module 2 and develops participants’ leadership skills and helps them unlock the potential within their team.

7 Day Programme

From £14,500 plus VAT and travel expenses

Day 1: The Management Essentials

To enable participants to:

  • have an in-depth understanding of the key skills and disciplines required in being an effective manager
  • clarify their goals, establish work objectives, set priorities and produce a personal strategy for effective time management
  • delegate appropriately and provide constructive feedback

Day 2: Communicating Effectively and Working in Teams

To develop the ability of participants to:

  • overcome the day-to-day barriers to communication at work
  • use effective communication to build relationships with colleagues and clients
  • enhance their confidence and capabilities at getting their message across with impact in a variety of situations
  • demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment and initiative in meeting management responsibilities, motivating themselves and those they work with

Day 3: Delivering Service Excellence

To enable participants to:

  • develop the key skills and disciplines required in looking after clients and developing additional work from existing clients
  • recognise behaviours that help or hinder the process of converting an enquiry into a satisfied client

Day 4: Developing Your Influencing Skills and Your Team

To enable participants to:

  • build rapport more easily with clients and colleagues and thereby develop stronger and longer lasting relationships
  • develop their influencing skills through an improved understanding of different communication styles
  • understand the importance of developing themselves and their personal brand for professional success
  • demonstrate confidence and capability in handling challenging situations and people in a variety of professional and personal situations
  • spot opportunities and devote time to act as coach and mentor to less experienced team members

Day 5: Mental Toughness

To enable participants to develop the psychological and behavioural edge to:

  • cope with the many demands that are being placed upon them as individual ‘business performers’ in areas such as target achievement, negotiation, people management, client management, self development, and lifestyle balance
  • be more consistent and more capable than competitors in remaining determined, focused, confident, and ‘in control’ when under pressure

Day 6: Motivational Leadership and Team Development

To enhance the ability of participants to:

  • exercise enabling leadership skills, gain commitment from colleagues and achieve high quality results
  • apply in depth coaching techniques to improve team performance and obtain better results through their people
  • achieve successful team development

Day 7: Business Development Skills

To enable participants to:

  • ensure their networking efforts achieve maximum effect
  • build their confidence in their own ability in networking situations
  • develop their selling ability in a prospecting or current client business development opportunity
