This session will consider the inheritance tax planning opportunities available to our retired and elderly clients. The use of trusts will also be considered, including a case study of a will which had the intentions of creating family provision.

Conference speakers


Amanda Fisher began her career with HM Revenue and Customs and later moved over into practice and qualified with Grant Thornton where she gained considerable experience dealing with private tax clients and their businesses, trusts and estates. Since becoming self employed in 2004, Amanda has her own tax and accountancy practice of private clients, alongside her other freelance work as a lecturer, examiner and author. She also regularly works as a consultant to firms and practitioners on an array of tax matters, specialising in capital taxes, trust and estate matters. Amanda has devoted time as a committee member for STEP and ICAEW and is currently a branch committee member for ATT/CIOT.


Paul Gordon

Paul's role is split between assisting clients, and the team of medical specialists located around the UK, along with speaking on the NHS Pension including the recent Consultation and Age Discrimination Case and the impact each will have on individuals and employers with particular attention given to the Annual and Lifetime Allowances. He regularly liaises with NHS Business Services Authority, some of the best medical specialist accountants in England and Wales, medical specialist solicitors and HMRC to ensure continued understanding of all aspects of the ongoing changes that could impact NHS workers. At Atomos, the Healthcare Team are able to assist clients in all aspects of financial planning including the NHS Pension, investment and inheritance tax planning along with mortgages and protection.


Annabel is an Associate at Higgs and Sons. She qualified in 2008 and has spent her whole career working in the areas of the Court of protection and looking after the legal needs of vulnerable children and adults. She is a full member of SFE and the Law Society, has acted as a trainer to West Mercia Police on capacity matters and advises numerous charities on care funding issues. Annabel also sits on the expert panel at the University of Worcester in the area of Dementia Studies.


Jonathan is a solicitor, lecturer and training consultant, and a partner in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean firm of Gwyn James Solicitors. Jonathan specialises in the law relating to the elderly with a particular regard to asset protection, long-term funding, and equity release. He lectures nationally on these matters to solicitors, accountants and financial advisers on accredited courses, conferences and in-house training. He is a contributor to various publications including Elderly Clients: A Precedent Manual Ed Denzil Lush and Caroline Bielanska (Jordans) Elderly Client Adviser (ark Group), PS (Private Client Section – The Law Society); Professional Adviser (Incisive Media) and Mortgage Solutions (ae3media).
